When creating websites for an international audience, here are some of the issues that need to be considered:
- Time and Date Displays: International time and dates are displayed differently around the world. In general, Americans indicate dates by Month-Day-Year (i.e. 09-15-2000) while Europeans use Day-Month-Year (i.e. 15-09-2000). Your website needs to be designed to accommodate these differences.
- Measurement Systems: If your website incorporates measurements, it should be written to accommodate both western and metric systems.
- Numbers and Currency: Many languages use commas instead of decimals points and a period or a space instead of a comma to indicate the thousands place. Symbols for currency differ between countries as well. Your website needs to be designed with these modifications in mind.
These are just some of the considerations that must be taken into account when designing or translating a website for an international audience.
